What is tetanus?
Tetanus, often known as lockjaw, is a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which produces a toxin that attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Without vaccination, even minor injuries can lead to tetanus infection, resulting in muscle stiffness and spasms, particularly in the jaw and neck.

Who is at risk of tetanus?
The tetanus vaccine is essential for travelers of all ages, especially those venturing to regions with limited medical care or where tetanus is prevalent. Individuals who have never been vaccinated, have an incomplete vaccination history, or are at risk of injury during travel should prioritize vaccination. Tetanus is found all over the globe, so it is considered an essential vaccine.
